The Union representing City of Greater Geelong staff has landed worrying claims about the Council’s financial state.
Earlier this month a draft budget revealed an $8m deficit which the council mainly blames on carry-over from the COVID-19 pandemic
The Australian Services Union believes the figure is grossly underestimated and claims it could be as high as $20m
ASU has blasted the city over recent redundancies, service cuts and a failure to hire a permanent CEO
Lisa Darmanin, Victorian Branch Secretary for the ASU is pushing for more details about the council’s financial woes
“Our information leads us to believe that the deficit will be around 15 to 20 million dollars – not eight million dollars and that is really concerning to us”
“What we really want to see is how did this happen, where was the level of oversight, and who going to be accountable for these massive failures in financial management at Council”
It comes as Mayor Trent Sullivan said he was “happy to entertain” the idea of pay cuts or pay freezes for councillors and administration executives.
